Basketball is one of the world’s most popular and widely viewed sports. It is also the most popular sport in the Philippines, played on both the amateur and professional levels. Filipinos are crazy over basketball.  Basketball fanatics all over Philippines have their own favorite team which they support through-out each season, whether its purely PBA (Philippine Basketball Association), or NBA (National Basketball Association).  In the 1950s, the Philippine team was among the best basketball teams in the world after winning two consecutive Asian Games basketball gold medals (1951, 1954). United States introduced the sport of Basketball through the YMCA in the Philippine Islands in- between 1898-1900.

Philippine Basketball Association (PBA)

The PBA or Philippine Basketball Association is the first professional basketball association in Asia and the second oldest in the world after the NBA.  It is composed of 10 company-branded franchised teams.  All franchises are owned by corporations. They are not based on geographic locale, so they do not play in a “home stadium.” The league rents the different stadiums in which the teams play.  A team’s name is often divided into three parts; the first is the company name, then the product, then a nickname – usually connected to the business of the company.

PBA  was established in 1975 and has produced a number of Most Valuable Players or MVP like Ramon Fernandez, Alvin Patrimonio, William Adornado, Benjie Paras, Danny Ildefonso, James Yap, Alberto Guidaben, Willie Miller, Robert Jaworski, Allan Caidic, Vergel Meneses, Kenneth Duremdes, Atoy Co, Johnny Abarrientos, Ricky Brown, Philip Cezar. When it comes to Basketball, Filipinos are die-hard fans and “addicted” to the sports.  Basketball is a part of Filipino life.
